Take Control of Your Sex(ual Health).

For many people, sexual health is a taboo subject, but creating an awareness on the topic can help educate people and encourage them to practice in safe sex, as well as reassure them that there is no stigma around testing for any sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Many people face barriers when it comes to support and accessibility with STI testing. With STI rates being in the hundreds of thousands each year in the U.K., anyone is at risk of catching one. STIs can take around two weeks to become detectable, so even if you feel perfectly healthy you could have an infection.

Common STIs

Herpes

Genital Herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus, Type 1 or Type 2. Herpes can only be diagnosed when symptoms are still present, and therefore it is important not to delay an STI test. Symptoms are predominantly small blisters, but can also include tingling, burning, or itching around the genitals, and pain when passing urine.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs in the U.K. This is a bacterial infection, and can be treated with a course of antibiotics, however it can be serious if it isn’t treated early on. Most people with chlamydia don’t notice any symptoms or that they have it. Symptoms can include pain when urinating, in women pain in the stomach and bleeding between periods, and in men pain and swelling in the testicles.

Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial STI caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae or gonococcus. This can affect the cervix, urethra, rectum, and throat or eyes. Around 1 in 10 infected men and almost half of women don’t experience symptoms. Gonorrhoea can be treated with an antibiotic injection, with a recommended follow-up appointment.

Syphilis

Syphilis symptoms are generally mild and hard to notice, and they tend to change over time. Sometimes these symptoms can improve or leave your body and the infection can still be present. This is treated with antibiotics, and the length of your treatment depends on the stage of your syphilis. At Randox Health we only screen for primary syphilis.
